As of the 2009 Research Grant Cycle, the Barth Syndrome Foundation, in consultation with its Scientific and Medical Advisory Board and with the support of the international affiliate chapters (Barth Syndrome Trust {UK and Europe} and Barth Syndrome Foundation of Canada), has committed almost USD $1.7 million through 47 awards to 29 investigators worldwide, in order to better understand this rare X-linked genetic disease characterized by cardiomyopathy, growth delay, muscle hypoplasia, neutropenia and extreme fatigue.
This competitive grant program has resulted in many publications which are unraveling the details of this multi-system disease and are leading towards new ideas for treatment. Many of the past and present grant awardees will be attending the 5th International Barth Syndrome Foundation International Scientific, Medical and Family Conference on July 26-31, 2010 in Orlando, Florida.
